Micro Digital Announces MTP/PTP and UVC for smxUSBD™

Costa Mesa, California, February 14, 2013 — Micro Digital is pleased to announce new multimedia functions available for the SMX® USB Device stack, smxUSBD. Media Transfer Protocol and Picture Transfer Protocol (MTP/PTP) and Video (UVC) functions have been added to complement Audio, which has been available for several years. PTP allows transfer of pictures from a still image camera or other device to a USB host. MTP is based on PTP and adds the ability to transfer additional media such as music and even data files. An advantage of MTP vs. mass storage for transferring data files is that the USB host does not have block-level access to the disk, which promotes safety. It avoids having two file systems accessing the same disk, and it allows limiting access to only certain files. The Video function driver allows streaming video from an embedded device with a camera to a USB host. The Audio driver enables an embedded device to drive speakers from audio data from a USB host and to connect to a microphone to record audio on the USB host. It also supports MIDI.

These protocols are supported by common operating systems such as Windows, Mac, and Linux. Drivers are built into these OSes, so custom drivers are not needed. This makes it easy to connect an embedded device to a PC and share files and data with the file system, media players, audio recorders, video capture programs, and other applications running on these hosts.
